Nashville Wants To Name Its Airport After Dolly Parton, But One Old Rule Stands In The Way

by Ruth A

Published September 5, 2026

Dolly Parton spent decades bringing people together through music, philanthropy, and an unmistakably warm public presence. Now, Tennessee leaders from different sides of the political divide are uniting behind a tribute that could permanently place her name over one of Nashville’s biggest gateways.

According to INC, state and city officials have thrown their support behind the idea of renaming Nashville International Airport in her honor. The proposed Dolly Parton airport has already attracted major public interest, with a petition gathering more than 170,000 signatures and Parton’s team saying they feel touched by the suggestion.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced his support for the renaming on Friday, while Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell also backed the idea. Their agreement stands out because state and city leaders have frequently disagreed over transportation and other policy matters. In this case, however, honoring Parton appears to have created rare common ground.

Supporters have also taken their campaign beyond government offices. A plane carrying a banner encouraging people to support the Dolly Parton airport proposal flew over the Tennessee Capitol on Friday morning. Change.org funded the flight, while Tennesseans Lydia Popovich and Dan Dion launched the petition in 2025. Nashville Councilman Russ Bradford has also sponsored a resolution supporting the change, though the final decision rests with the airport authority.

Parton’s connection to Tennessee stretches across nearly every chapter of her remarkable life. She grew up in Sevier County in the Smoky Mountains before heading to Nashville and building one of country music’s most enduring careers. Along the way, she became known not only for songs such as “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” but also for Dollywood, her charitable efforts, and a personality that often crossed cultural and political divides.

Parton’s team remains open to discussions, saying the tribute could reflect her lifelong unifying spirit. While the final decision rests with the appropriate authority, support for the idea already highlights her importance to Tennessee. Renaming the airport would connect Nashville’s musical identity with one of its most beloved icons, giving travelers a lasting reminder of Parton’s legacy.
