Only One Member Of The Cleaver Family From ‘Leave It To Beaver’ Is Still Alive Today

by Ruth A

Published August 18, 2026

For generations of television viewers, the Cleavers looked like the picture-perfect American family. Leave It to Beaver followed Ward, June, Wally, and Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver through everyday childhood problems, family lessons, and the kind of wholesome suburban adventures that made the sitcom a comfort-watch favorite long after its original run ended.

According to Remind, more than six decades after the final episode aired in 1963, however, the original Cleaver household has changed dramatically. Of the four actors who played the immediate family, Jerry Mathers, who starred as Beaver, is the only one still living. Looking back at the Leave It to Beaver cast now makes the series feel even more nostalgic, especially for fans who grew up feeling as though the Cleavers were neighbors of their own.

Jerry Mathers remains the surviving member of the original Cleaver family. The actor became one of television’s most recognizable child stars when he took on the role of Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver in 1957. He appeared alongside Hugh Beaumont as father Ward, Barbara Billingsley as mother June, and Tony Dow as older brother Wally throughout the sitcom’s six-season run.

Sadly, Beaumont died in 1982, while Billingsley died in 2010. Dow, whose portrayal of Wally made him an enduring part of classic television history, died in 2022. Other familiar faces from the program have also died, including Ken Osmond, who played the memorably troublesome Eddie Haskell, in 2020. Their losses have made Mathers an especially important living connection to the show’s central family and the era of television it represented.

Mathers already had experience in entertainment before he entered the Cleaver household. His career began when he was still a toddler, and he appeared in several films before landing his signature television role. One of those early performances came in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1955 movie The Trouble with Harry, where he played the young son of Shirley MacLaine’s character. After Leave It to Beaver, Mathers stepped away from full-time acting and later became involved in health advocacy. Still, audiences continue to remember him best as the good-hearted Beaver Cleaver.

The show itself has enjoyed an unusually long afterlife. Reruns kept the Cleavers in American living rooms for decades, while audience affection eventually led to the 1983 television movie Still the Beaver and the revival series The New Leave It to Beaver. That lasting popularity explains why seeing members of the Leave It to Beaver cast remains so meaningful to longtime viewers. Mathers may have grown far beyond the child audiences first met in Mayfield, but for generations of fans, a little bit of “The Beav” will always remain.
