Published August 12, 2026

Stockard Channing has spent much of her life in the public eye, building a career that includes memorable roles in Grease, The West Wing, and Practical Magic. However, at 82, the actress has embraced a far quieter lifestyle away from Hollywood.

According to People, Stockard Channing, reclusive life began after a devastating personal loss changed her outlook. Following the death of her longtime partner, Daniel Gillham, Channing eventually left the United States for London. Today, she lives alone and says she is genuinely happy with the life she has created.

Gillham died in 2014 after being Channing’s partner for more than two decades. In an essay for The Sunday Times, the actress admitted that the full impact of his death took time to reach her. “My partner, Daniel, died in 2014, and it was more devastating than I realized; it had a lag effect,” she wrote. As her old routine disappeared, Channing realized she needed a significant change in her surroundings as well.

That realization eventually led her to leave Maine and relocate to London shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. Changing politics in the United States also influenced her decision to move. Since losing Gillham, Channing has continued living by herself and has discovered that she enjoys the independence. “I’ve lived alone since I lost Daniel, and I’m happy being a recluse,” she explained.

Romance has played a significant role in different chapters of Channing’s life. She was married four times before beginning her relationship with Gillham in 1990. However, she has little interest in searching for another partner now. During a 2025 interview with The Sunday Times, Channing said another relationship sounded like more trouble than she wanted. Instead, she is content with her friendships and the freedom of living on her own. She also acknowledged occasionally wondering about never having children, although she approaches that part of her life without regret.

Meanwhile, the Stockard Channing reclusive life hasn’t brought her acting career to a complete end. She is returning as Aunt Franny in Practical Magic 2, alongside Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, and Dianne Wiest. Channing is also preparing to direct Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape later this year. After those projects, she may retreat from the spotlight again. “I’m not sure I’ll do anything after that,” she admitted, adding that with acting, “you never know what’s going to happen.”
