Pee-wee Herman took the world by storm, with Paul Reubens becoming a household name for his role as the quirky character. Every child of the ‘80s knew his laugh, his red bow tie, and his playful antics. However, it all came crashing down when Reubens faced legal trouble. He was accused of indecent exposure and child pornography. These accusations dragged his career into the dark, and it led to years of struggling to be back in the spotlight.
Now, in a posthumous documentary, Paul Reubens made one last request to his fans and the public to forget the accusations that plagued him, all through his life and career. Just a day before his passing in 2023, he recorded a message for his documentary Pee-wee as Himself.
Paul Reubens claimed the pedophile allegations destroyed his reputation
In the documentary, Reubens talked about controversies and accusations that destroyed his public image. He revealed that the moment he was labeled a “pedophile,” he knew it was going to change everything about his life. The documentary also shed light on his 1991 indecent exposure charge and the 2002 legal case involving pornographic materials found in his possession. Reubens maintained that he was unfairly judged and misunderstood. He also spoke about the damage the allegations did to his career and personal life.
The film also focused on Reubens’ personal life and sexuality. He revealed that he hid his sexuality because his career would have suffered if he had been openly gay. But now, he thinks that most of the struggles he faced were due to his private nature.
