Nearly four decades after the passing of his Sam and Dave partner David Prater, Sam Moore was confirmed dead at 89 on Friday morning. He reportedly suffered complications following a surgery and breathed his last in Coral Gables, Florida. The news broke on the internet shortly after, and fans paid their heartfelt respect to the music icon in response.
Sam’s fame came with being the other half of Sam and Dave in the ‘60s, although he used to perform soul and R&B music at clubs the decade before. His solo career continued after the two-man group broke up in 1970, after which Sam collaborated with other artists. His hit song “Soul Man” was also covered by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as the Blues Brothers.
Sam Moore battled drug addiction and conflict with his music partner
Sam’s battle with addiction impacted his career negatively, however, his wife Joyce played a major role in helping him achieve sobriety. During his early sober years, Sam took more gigs, including those he did not dream of accepting years before, such as cruise ship performances.
His relationship with David was not always a smooth one, as they fought dirty towards the end of their joint career. The latter reportedly began to tour with another musician under the same name, Sam and Dave, and Sam took legal action against him.
Sam Moore’s later years
He continued to perform well into his late 80s, and even joined Bruce Springsteen on his 2022 soul cover album for the tracks “Soul Days” and “I Forgot to Be Your Lover.” He also performed alongside legendary country stars at 2023’s Still Playin’ Possum concert at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
The late soul icon is survived by his wife Joyce, their daughter Mitchell, and two grandkids. His supporters have taken to social media in reaction to his passing, mostly praising his talent and legacy. “Sam Moore was one of my all-time favorite singers. Legendary soul man. Thank you for the music, sir,” someone wrote.
