Take a close-up photo of the ant and look it up online. If you can’t figure out what type of ant it is, try emailing it to your local library or university. They can help to ID the type of ant for you. This can help you figure out a game plan on how to get rid of this specific type of ant.

2. Put out ant poison and wait

Avoid physically killing them yourself when you put out ant poison. Put it in places where you’ve seen ants, especially under the sink and along walls or windows. You may see more ants at first, but once they take the bait and bring it back to their colony, you’ll get rid of them for good. If you have pets or don’t want to use chemicals, try using lemons. Apparently, these critters don’t like lemon juice. You can also mix one part vinegar with three parts water in a spray bottle to clean wherever you see ants. This can get rid of their trail.

3. Take care of the outdoors too

Remember to spray outdoors to keep the ants from coming inside in the first place. Also, trim back any plants or trees that are near your home. Move firewood away from your house. Eliminate anything that may be helping them get inside and patch up any holes in your home where they might be coming in.

4. Get rid of the ant nest
