Catherine Zeta-Jones Revealed The Bold Line Michael Douglas Used The Night They Met, And It Worked

by Dana Daly

Published October 19, 2026

In 1998, a 28-year-old Welsh actress walked into a hotel lobby at the Deauville American Film Festival in France and watched Michael Douglas stroll past her carrying a set of golf clubs. He was 53, a two-time Oscar winner and the son of Kirk Douglas. She had just made her first big Hollywood picture. Before their first evening together was over, he had said something to her so forward that she wished him goodnight and walked away.

Nearly 26 years of marriage later, both of them still tell the story. Catherine Zeta-Jones, now 57, has given her version in magazine interviews and on daytime TV, most recently this month. Michael Douglas, now 82, has told it on talk shows and in his brand-new memoir, One Helluva Ride. Their accounts of the line match almost word for word. Their opinions of it do not.

Catherine Zeta-Jones was born on September 25, 1969, in Swansea, Wales. Her father, David Jones, owned a sweet factory. Her mother Patricia was a seamstress, according to her Wikipedia biography. She started dance lessons as a small child and performed with her church’s amateur theatre group.

She was a working performer before most kids pick a high school. At nine she was cast as July, one of the orphans, in the original West End production of Annie. In 1981 she played the title role in a Swansea staging of the same show. Two years later she was Tallulah in a West End production of Bugsy Malone, and by 15 she had left school and moved to London to work full time, according to Outlook India’s profile of the actress.

Her real break was a backstage scramble. In 1987 she was the second understudy for Peggy Sawyer in the West End run of 42nd Street at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. One night the star and the first understudy were both unable to go on, so the teenager from Swansea went on instead. Both Wikipedia and Outlook India report that the producer was so impressed he gave her the part for the next two years. That is very close to the plot of 42nd Street itself, where a chorus girl steps in for an injured leading lady.

British TV made her famous at home. From 1991 she played Mariette, the eldest daughter on ITV’s The Darling Buds of May. It was the highest-rated show in Britain at the time. American audiences, and one American movie star in particular, did not meet her until a few years later.

Steven Spielberg recommended her to director Martin Campbell for The Mask of Zorro, and she won the role of Elena opposite Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins. The 1998 swashbuckler grossed more than $250 million worldwide. Douglas saw it before almost anyone else did.

Douglas shared an audio post on Instagram for their 20th anniversary, and Entertainment Tonight reported what he said. He watched Zorro at a friend’s house in Hollywood in 1998 and thought, “Wow, who is this girl? She’s incredible.” Zeta-Jones has told the same story from her side. “He says he fell in love with me the first time he saw me on screen,” she told Hello! magazine.

He goes further in the memoir. “I had never fallen in love on a movie screen before. Until I saw Catherine,” Douglas writes in One Helluva Ride, as quoted by Hola! He adds that he was certain “she was the one.” About a month after that screening, he got the chance to find out in person.

What Happened When They Finally Met At Deauville?

Both stars were at the seaside festival in Normandy, and Entertainment Tonight’s account places her there for a screening of her new film. “The first time I saw him was in the hotel lobby,” Zeta-Jones recalled to Hello! magazine. “He walked right past me, carrying his golf clubs.” Douglas has called that festival “the best memory I got,” according to Hola!

They had a drink together, and in his Instagram retelling Douglas said it “was everything I hoped for!” Her first impression was good, too. “My very first impression was that he was very funny and very charming,” Zeta-Jones told the magazine Tarts in 2009, according to Fox News.

They also discovered they share a birthday. Douglas was born on September 25, 1944, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, exactly 25 years to the day before she was born in Swansea. The couple still celebrates the date together every year, as we covered in how Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones mark their shared birthday. That first night at the festival bar, though, Douglas talked his way into trouble before the drinks were finished.

How Did They Get From A Bad First Impression To The Plaza Hotel?

Douglas has said he was sure he had ruined it. On The Jonathan Ross Show in 2016, as reported by Hello!, he explained that he arranged for roses and an apology to be sent to her, and they were waiting by the time she reached the Isle of Mull in Scotland. The gesture worked, but slowly. According to Hello!, Zeta-Jones has said “we never even kissed until nine months later.”

They went public in June 1999. At the Edinburgh premiere of her heist film Entrapment with Sean Connery, she told reporters Douglas had come “because we wanted to publicly say that we are together,” according to Hello! On New Year’s Eve 1999, Douglas proposed at his home in Aspen, Colorado. A CBS News report at the time gave their ages as 55 and 30, and her representative described the ring as a “big ol’ diamond ring.”

Their son, Dylan Michael Douglas, was born on August 8, 2000. Three months later, on November 18, 2000, the couple married at the Plaza Hotel in New York, according to both Wikipedia and Hello! Dylan is now 26.

Her career took off at the same speed as the family. She played a drug lord’s wife in Traffic (2000), a film that also starred her husband, and the character was written as pregnant at her own suggestion. Then came Velma Kelly in Chicago. She won Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards on March 23, 2003, while heavily pregnant. Hello! reported she even sang a duet with Queen Latifah on the Oscar stage. Their daughter, Carys Zeta Douglas, was born in April 2003, and she is now 23. Both children have since joined their parents on red carpets.

The marriage itself reached 25 years in November 2025. Zeta-Jones marked the day on Instagram by recalling the candles and the Welsh choir at the Plaza. “I love you today as I did then. Thank you sweetheart,” she wrote, according to Fox News.

The later chapters kept coming. She won a Tony Award in 2010 for her Broadway debut in A Little Night Music and was made a CBE the same year. In 2022 she became Morticia Addams in Netflix’s Wednesday and returned for season 2 in 2025. Netflix has said season 3 is in production with her back in the role. Through all of it, she and her husband have kept retelling one moment from Deauville.

So What Exactly Did Michael Douglas Say To Her?

LOS ANGELES – JAN 27: Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones at the 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium on January 27, 2019 in Los Angeles, CA

After about half an hour at the bar, Douglas told her, “You know, I’m going to be the father of your children.” That is the wording he gave on The Jonathan Ross Show, according to Hello! In his 2020 Instagram retelling, reported by Entertainment Tonight, it was “I’m gonna be the father of your children.” On On Air With Ryan Seacrest in 2018, according to Hola!, he admitted it was “a little presumptuous.”

Her reply was a polite exit. Douglas has quoted it as, “I’ve heard a lot about you and I’ve seen a lot about you and I think it’s time that I said goodnight.” In the ET version it is shorter: “I’ve heard a lot about you. I guess it’s all true. Goodnight.” Then she left. “I probably made a big mistake,” he said. He told Entertainment Tonight he “thought I had completely blown it.”

Her own telling has always confirmed the line. Hello! quotes her recalling that he told her, “I want to father your children.” In 2009 she told Tarts, via Fox News, that “straight away he was very direct that he wanted to be the father of my children. So that was it.” In 2007, according to Parade magazine as reported by The Himalayan Times, she said she settled the question for real a few months into dating, once she was already in love. “I turned to him and said, ‘Do you really want children?'” she recalled. “I remember saying defiantly, ‘I cannot live without having children.’ And he went, ‘Me too.'”

This month, with the story back in print in his memoir, she gave it a fresh review. Appearing on The View in October 2026, she called the line “a little much,” according to The Daily Beast and TV Insider. She said people usually respond to the story with “Aw.” Her advice to them was to think about it for one minute, since the two of them had only just met.

She also told the hosts, and NBC’s Today, that she has no plans to read the memoir any time soon. “As much as I love my husband, when I’m tired at night, I have no intention of reading about him,” she said on Today, as quoted by The Daily Beast. On The View she softened it, saying she will read it eventually and calling the book “part of a legacy of a great, great career.” For more from the book, see Douglas’s admission about his romance with Kathleen Turner. As for the line he worried had cost him everything at Deauville, it came true twice: in August 2000 and again in April 2003.
