‘Charles In Charge’ Star Nicole Eggert, 54, Has A Full Hysterectomy After Doctors Find Signs Of More Cancer

Nicole Eggert

Long before she was a teen idol, a five-year-old girl from Glendale, California, won a beauty pageant and walked straight into a television commercial. That girl was Nicole Eggert, who was born on January 13, 1972, and is 54 today. Viewers grew up with her on Charles in Charge and watched her run down the beach on Baywatch.

For almost three years, Nicole Eggert has also been sharing a much harder story with her fans: a rare breast cancer, two major surgeries, and a third operation she announced this spring. She has told it in her own words on Instagram and in interviews with People, Fox News and Page Six. Here is how the pageant kid became one of the most candid voices in Hollywood about cancer.

How Did A Five-Year-Old Pageant Winner Land In Hollywood?

According to Wikipedia’s biography of the actress, Eggert was crowned Miss Universe in the petite division when she was five. An agent spotted her after the win and booked her in a Johnson’s baby shampoo commercial. Other profiles of her childhood tell the same story of a pageant title leading directly to that first ad.

Movie work followed quickly. As Hello! Magazine recounts, she was eight when she played Candice Bergen’s young daughter in the 1981 film Rich and Famous, which also starred Jacqueline Bisset. Wikipedia lists the same film among her first credits, along with the 1979 TV movie When She Was Bad…

By 13 she had a recurring part on Who’s the Boss?, playing a friend of Alyssa Milano’s character, according to Hello! Wikipedia dates that run to 1985 and 1986. One year later, a much bigger job came calling.

Charles in Charge had a short first life on CBS. Wikipedia’s history of the series says it premiered on October 3, 1984, and its network run ended in April 1985. The sitcom came back in first-run syndication on January 3, 1987, with a new family in the house.

That family was the Powells. Eggert played Jamie Powell, one of two daughters in the household that Scott Baio’s college student Charles looked after, while Josie Davis played her sister Sarah. Both Wikipedia’s page on Eggert and Hello! place her in the main cast from that 1987 revival.

The revival ran until November 10, 1990, with 26 episodes in each syndicated season. Willie Aames appeared in every one as Charles’s best friend Buddy, and Ellen Travolta played his mother Lillian. Eggert spent her teenage years on that set. When the show wrapped, she was 18, and a red swimsuit was not far off.

Why Did She Leave Baywatch After Two Seasons?

Eggert joined Baywatch at 20, according to Hello!, playing lifeguard Summer Quinn in seasons three and four. Hello! notes she was the youngest member of the team, and Wikipedia confirms the same two-season run. She came back a decade later for the reunion movie Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding in 2003.

The show made her famous around the world, but she has said it also boxed her in. In an October 2025 interview carried by WEAR News, she explained that she left because the part didn’t fit where she wanted her career to go. “It was like you were a ‘Baywatch’ bimbo,” she said, adding that casting directors stopped seeing her the same way.

She has made peace with the show since. Eggert co-produced and appeared in the 2024 Hulu docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, which Wikipedia also credits to her. She told WEAR the cast is still “one big, huge family.” We have written before about how the swimsuit image followed her into her dating life.

Reality television kept her busy in the 2000s and 2010s. Wikipedia lists her on VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club in 2010 and as the runner-up on ABC’s diving competition Splash in 2013. Hello! reports she was injured while taping Splash.

A year later, she tried something sweeter. In 2014 she launched Scoops, an “ice cream shop on wheels” that mostly worked private parties, according to Hello! She told OWN in 2015 that the idea came from planning her daughter’s birthday parties. “All the ice cream truck guys were creepy,” she said. Today she hosts the podcast Perfectly Twisted, which both WEAR and Wikipedia cite.

Eggert has two daughters and has never married, according to Wikipedia. Her older daughter, Dilyn, was born in 1998, when Eggert was 26. Both Wikipedia and Hello! name actor Justin Herwick as Dilyn’s father. Eggert keeps her younger daughter’s private life private, and she has never revealed that child’s father.

That younger girl was at the center of everything when the diagnosis came. “I have a 12-year-old at home where I’m the only caregiver,” Eggert told People in January 2024. She called not being there for her children her biggest fear. So what did doctors find, and how did one fear lead to three operations?

The warning signs began in October 2023. Eggert told People she had gained about 25 pounds in three months and had “terrible pain” in her left breast. After she felt a lump during a self-exam, she called her doctor. “It really was throbbing and hurting,” she said. In early December 2023 she learned it was stage 2 cribriform carcinoma, a rare form of breast cancer, as both People and Fox News reported.

She was honest about what she wished she had done sooner. “The self-exams, I’m telling you, I kick myself. That’s the one thing I should have been doing,” she said in early 2024, as The Daily Beast reported. In March 2024, People reported, she shaved her head before starting chemotherapy, with her younger daughter helping.

Treatment came in stages. Fox News reported she finished chemotherapy in July 2024 and also had radiation, and Entertainment Now counted eight rounds of chemo plus lymph node removal. Her first mastectomy came in October 2024, according to People and Entertainment Now. “The lymph node removal is much more painful than the mastectomy,” she later told Fox News.

The second surgery came on August 21, 2025, Fox News reported. Eggert announced it on Instagram with her trademark humor: “Had a mastectomy with reconstruction on Thursday. How was ur weekend?” People quoted the same post. A few weeks later she shared good news with Page Six. “I just had my second mastectomy, and I had reconstruction, and my pathology reports came back clear,” she said.

Clear results did not mean the journey was over, and she said so plainly. “It’s a month-to-month thing,” she told Fox News Digital in November 2025, describing monthly blood tests. On December 2, 2025, she celebrated another clean result on Instagram. “Today my tests were clear and my white blood cell count was up without those damn blood injections,” she wrote, according to Entertainment Now and The Daily Beast.

Fox News had reported that her next step would be either a hysterectomy or years of hormone therapy. On March 18, 2026, she shared her choice on Instagram, along with photos of her scars. “What a journey. Test results showed early signs of more cancer,” she wrote. “I am grateful to my doctors for keeping such a close eye on me.” Both People and Fox News reported that she had undergone a full hysterectomy.

She added a message for other women in the same post. “Full Hysterectomy eliminates at least 7 different types of cancers,” Eggert wrote, and she tagged it with “get screened.” She has also said she will never be fully done with cancer. “It’s a forever thing. It’s forever,” she told The U.S. Sun, as Fox News reported.

Her outlook through all of it comes from a line she posted with the hysterectomy news. “We can give in to our fear and anxiety, or we can surrender to this great mystery with courage,” she wrote. Readers who want to follow more of her story can see what Nicole Eggert shared about her breast cancer reconstruction.
