Nearly five decades after releasing one of his most beloved songs, Elvis Costello is finally addressing a longstanding theory about its meaning. The legendary British singer-songwriter recently revisited his 1977 ballad “Alison,” revealing why listeners have misunderstood the emotional story behind the recording for years.

According to UCR, the song, which appeared on his debut album, My Aim Is True, has attracted several interpretations since its release. Although many listeners recognize it as a heartbreaking love song, others have suggested that its darker lyrics hint at something far more sinister. Now, the 72-year-old musician is explaining what inspired the classic track and revealing an unexpected connection to another legendary rock guitarist.

During a recent appearance on the Broken Record podcast, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer addressed speculation that “Alison” tells the story of a murder. “It’s not a murder ballad,” he stated, rejecting the theory that has followed the song for decades. Instead, he explained that the lyrics explore how someone’s personality and behavior can threaten the love they value most. The singer described the track as a romantic song that acknowledges the possibility of heartbreak, disappointment, and a relationship falling apart.

The musician also revealed that Jimi Hendrix helped shape the emotional direction of the song. Specifically, he drew inspiration from Hendrix’s classic recording “The Wind Cries Mary,” which explores the aftermath of a troubled relationship. Costello explained that the track taught him how a songwriter could express complicated romantic emotions through vivid imagery. Interestingly, he also credited Hendrix with another valuable lesson: the importance of occasionally breaking expectations during live television performances. Both influences helped shape his approach to music during his early career.

When My Aim Is True arrived in 1977, Costello was still a relatively unknown songwriter from London. The album introduced audiences to his distinctive voice, clever lyrics, and ability to blend rock, pop, and new wave influences. Alongside “Alison,” the record featured memorable tracks such as “Welcome to the Working Week,” “Less Than Zero,” and “Watching the Detectives,” the latter appearing on the American edition. His storytelling quickly distinguished him from other emerging performers, helping establish the foundation for a career that would span nearly five decades.

Costello previously revealed that a supermarket checkout worker inspired “Alison,” though its ambiguous lyrics sparked different interpretations. His latest clarification comes as his debut album receives an anniversary box set featuring 104 tracks, including remastered recordings, demos, outtakes, and live performances. Nearly 50 years later, “Alison” remains a testament to his songwriting talent and the lasting appeal of a deeply personal love song.
