Wynonna Judd has never been one to hide the hard parts, and she is not starting now. In a new People cover story, the 62-year-old country star shared that she and her younger sister, actress Ashley Judd, are giving each other some room. “We’re taking a break, which all families can relate to,” Wynonna said, as reported by Closer Weekly. “She’s doing her thing, and I’m doing mine.”
Ashley, 58, has not yet heard her sister’s new album, ‘The Hard Truth,’ which comes out Friday, October 2. Page Six noted that Wynonna described the two of them as not “connected” at the moment. She was just as clear that the distance will not last. Asked whether they will find their way back to each other, she answered “absolutely.” Anyone with a brother or sister knows that seasons like this come and go. Wynonna seemed to be speaking to those families as much as to her own.
Wynonna Judd Calls ‘The Hard Truth’ Her Most Honest Work

The sisters’ relationship has had its complications for years, shaped in part by their difficult childhood. Wynonna, who is four years older than Ashley, often took on a protective, almost parental role while their mother pursued her nursing career and later found country music fame. Ashley even refers to her older sister as her “sister mommy.” Despite their differences, Wynonna emphasized that no single incident caused their latest period of distance.
The sisters lost their mother, Naomi Judd, in 2022 at the age of 76. They grieved in public and later told their family’s story together in a Lifetime documentary. The new record walks the same ground, including Wynonna’s complicated bond with the mother who was also her singing partner.
“I feel like this is the most honest and vulnerable I’ve ever been,” she told People. For fans who grew up on ‘Mama He’s Crazy’ and ‘Love Can Build a Bridge,’ that honesty has always been the point. The harmonies sounded like a real family because they came from one, rough patches and all.
