The Judd sisters are opening up about the part of their lives and family that has never been known publicly. Naomi and Wynonna were once an unstoppable force in country music. After signing with RCA Records in 1983, the duo quickly rose to fame, releasing six albums that included hits like Wynonna & Naomi and Love Can Build a Bridge.
However, while the world saw a glamorous mother-daughter duo on stage, life behind the scenes was much more complicated. Nearly three years after Naomi Judd’s passing, Wynonna and her sister, actress Ashley Judd, share their side of the story in The Judd Family: Truth Be Told, a two-part documentary aired on Lifetime over Mother’s Day weekend.
The Judd sisters on their upcoming documentary
Naomi and Wynonna Judd had over twenty singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, with fourteen reaching number one. They also collected five Grammy Awards and nine CMA Awards, earning their place in country music history. Following Naomi’s death, the documentary promises to reveal a deeper, more personal side of the Judd family, marked by secrets and silent pain.
Although Naomi and Wynonna wowed fans with their music, the documentary highlights that the bond between Naomi and her daughters was far from simple. At first, the story shows Naomi’s rise and her daughters’ joy, but later, the documentary focuses on family trauma and struggles.

Wynonna shares how being so closely tied to her mother was both a gift and a heavy burden. Ashley also recounts her own experiences, revealing childhood challenges and the distance that often grew between them and their mother, who battled mental illness for much of her life.
Early years
The documentary also explores Naomi’s early years as a teen mom in Kentucky, her transformation into country music, and fame’s impact on her daughters through unreleased home videos and previously unheard audio recordings.
This series marks the first time the sisters have shared their full story on screen, opening up about the long-hidden pain. The Judd Family: Truth Be Told will premiere on Lifetime on May 10 and 11 at 8 p.m. ET.
