Jamie Farr became one of the most recognizable faces on M*A*S*H, but his journey to becoming Corporal Klinger started much more modestly than fans might expect. The actor recently revealed that he earned just $153 for his very first appearance on the classic sitcom.
According to Parade, the Jamie Farr MASH story began in Season 1, Episode 4, when Klinger was intended to be little more than a one-time guest character. Farr did not even audition for the part. Producer and director Gene Reynolds called him personally and told him there was a role on the new series that he thought Farr would be perfect for.
Jamie Farr’s ‘M*A*S*H’ Debut Paid Far Less Than Fans Might Expect

During an appearance on the Pop Culture Retro podcast, host Moosie Drier mentioned a story that Farr had received $250 for his first day on the show. Farr quickly corrected him. The actual amount, he said, was only $153.

At the time, no one could have known that Klinger would become such an important part of the series. Farr continued returning during the first three seasons before officially joining the regular cast in Season 4 in 1975. His character, initially known for wearing dresses in hopes of convincing the Army that he deserved a discharge, eventually developed far beyond the original joke.
Klinger Became Both a Blessing and a Career Challenge
By the time M*A*S*H ended in 1983, Klinger had become one of television’s most familiar characters. Farr later reprised the role alongside Harry Morgan and William Christopher in the spinoff. After MASH, she continued appearing in television shows, including Murder, She Wrote and Mad About You. Yet Farr has also spoken candidly about the downside of becoming so closely identified with one character. In a 2024 interview, he said Klinger “in a sense” hurt his career because audiences struggled to separate Jamie Farr, the actor, from the man they remembered wearing dresses at the 4077th. He noted that people still often approached him with jokes about Klinger’s wardrobe.
Even so, the character gave Farr a place in television history that few actors ever achieve. What began as a single guest appearance and a $153 paycheck turned into years on one of the most beloved sitcoms ever made. Now retired in his 90s, Farr can look back on a role that grew far beyond anyone’s expectations. The Jamie Farr MASH story is a reminder that sometimes the smallest television opportunity can become the defining role of a lifetime.
