by Ruth A

Published September 2, 2026

Five years after the death of Ed Asner, his son Matt Asner is remembering the legendary actor with a deeply personal collection of photos. The filmmaker shared images that captured his father across different stages of life, from early theater work to beloved television roles and quiet moments at home.

According to People, the Matt Asner Ed Asner tribute appeared on X on Aug. 29 and included one simple message about how much he still misses his father. For longtime fans, the post offered both a family remembrance and a nostalgic look back at one of television’s most respected performers.

Matt, 62, shared several photographs of his father, including an image of Asner sitting on the floor with his dogs and another taken on the set of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Other pictures showed the actor performing onstage in the late 1950s and later in life.

Alongside the photos, Matt wrote that he could hardly believe five years had passed and said his father remained with him even as he continued to miss him. Asner died in 2021 at age 91 after a career that stretched across television, film, theater, and voice acting.

Asner became best known as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show before carrying the character into the drama Lou Grant. His work made him one of Emmy’s most decorated male performers. He also appeared in Roots, Elf, The Good Wife, and Cobra Kai and voiced Carl in Pixar’s Up.

His passing also came during a particularly difficult period for fans of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Several members of the beloved cast died around the same time, including Cloris Leachman, Gavin MacLeod, and Betty White. Mary Tyler Moore had died in 2017, while Valerie Harper and Georgia Engel died in 2019. That history gives the Matt Asner/Ed Asner tribute even greater emotional weight. The photographs do more than celebrate an actor with Emmys, Golden Globes, and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. They show a father remembered by his son and a performer whose work still brings back warm memories of one of television’s most cherished eras.
