Earth, Wind & Fire Shares Major Update On Drummer John Paris After Medically Induced Coma

by Ruth A

Published August 25, 2026

Earth, Wind & Fire has shared another update on longtime drummer John Paris following the serious medical emergency that forced the group to cancel its August 6 concert at San Francisco’s Chase Center. While there have been signs of progress, his condition remains uncertain as doctors prepare for the next stages of his treatment.

According to RTT News, Paris was placed in an induced coma after the medical emergency and briefly awakened before doctors needed to sedate him again. He has since regained consciousness once more, but his family and those close to him have made clear that his recovery is far from over.

A representative for Earth, Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White said Paris recently woke again and showed encouraging progress. His blood pressure and breathing have stabilized, marking an important development after several difficult days.

Still, doctors have determined that the drummer needs two major surgeries, and he remains in intensive care. His wife, Kathy Merrick, described the experience as a “marathon” and said her husband continues fighting every day. She acknowledged that the family still faces a long road, even as each step forward gives them renewed hope.

The medical emergency has brought an outpouring of concern for the veteran musician, who has spent years behind the drums for one of funk, soul, and R&B’s most enduring groups. Earth, Wind & Fire initially kept many details private out of respect for Paris and his family before sharing more information as news of his hospitalization spread. The group has continued to emphasize that updates will come when there is meaningful news to share. For now, John Paris remains under close medical care while his family, friends, and bandmates wait to see how his recovery progresses.

For longtime Earth, Wind & Fire fans, the latest news brings both relief and concern. Waking from his coma and achieving greater stability are significant steps, but the upcoming surgeries mean there are still serious hurdles ahead. His wife has thanked supporters for continuing to stand with the family throughout the ordeal. And while there is hope surrounding his recent progress, those closest to Paris are not treating his recovery as a finished story. For now, the focus remains on getting him safely through the difficult stages still ahead.
