Fans of country music and musical theater have something special to look forward to later this year. Dolly Parton is bringing the story of her remarkable life to New York with a stage production that promises to reveal the woman behind the rhinestones and chart-topping hits.
According to The Guardian, the new musical arrives at a fitting moment in her journey. The official opening night has been scheduled for January 19, the beloved singer’s 81st birthday, turning an already historic occasion into an unforgettable celebration for both Parton and her fans.
A Lifetime of Dolly Parton Stories Heads to the Broadway Stage
The production, titled Dolly: A True Original Musical, will begin preview performances at the St. James Theatre in December before its official opening in January. The show follows her journey from humble beginnings to global fame, exploring the experiences that shaped one of country music’s most recognizable voices.
Parton has described the production as an honest reflection of her life rather than a celebration of fame alone. She explained that the musical explores where she came from, the people she loved, the losses she endured, and the moments that helped define her path. Alongside familiar classics, audiences can also expect brand-new songs written specifically for the production.
The Woman Behind the Legend Finally Shares Her Story
The musical first appeared in Nashville last year, where it enjoyed a sold-out run and generated excitement among longtime admirers of the singer’s work. Its move to New York marks the next chapter for a project that has already proven to resonate deeply with audiences.
Director Bartlett Sher said audiences often feel a personal connection to the country icon because of the joy and inspiration she has brought into their lives for decades. The production features beloved songs including Jolene, I Will Always Love You, Coat of Many Colors, and 9 to 5 while giving audiences a chance to hear her story directly through her own words and music.
