Original Wicked Witch Hat Up For Auction Promises Record-Breaking Sale

Fans of The Wizard of Oz will soon have a chance to own a piece of cinematic history. Heritage Auctions will sell a wicked witch hat up for auction on December 9. The hat belonged to Margaret Hamilton, who portrayed the Wicked Witch of the West in the 1939 film. According to People report, collectors are expected to compete fiercely for this rare item.

The wicked witch hat up for auction is an original Adrian-designed piece made of black wool bunting. Its cone-shaped crown stands over a foot high and tilts backward to create the character’s signature look. In addition, the hat keeps its 22-inch elastic chinstrap, which Hamilton wore during the flying sequences. Only a few examples like this survive today, which makes it a highly sought-after collectible.

Auctioneers predict the wicked witch hat up for auction could surpass the $3 million sale of a similar hat in 2024. The reference article notes that this is the only other known Wicked Witch hat with its original chinstrap to appear at auction. Heritage Auctions recently performed sensitive conservation work to tighten the brim. Despite these updates, the hat retains signs of age and production wear, which adds to its authenticity.

Collectors are eager for the sale, as the hat ranks among the most significant Wizard of Oz artifacts outside of the ruby slippers. Furthermore, Heritage Auctions calls it a must-have piece of cinematic history that represents one of Hollywood’s most iconic villains. The auction will likely see competitive bidding from fans and collectors alike.

The Legacy of The Wizard of Oz Memorabilia

The wicked witch hat up for auction continues a tradition of high-profile Wizard of Oz memorabilia sales. Last year, Judy Garland’s ruby slippers sold for $32.5 million, making them the most valuable movie memorabilia ever sold. As the reference article points out, this hat offers a unique opportunity to own a tangible piece of Hollywood history.

With the upcoming auction, collectors can add a legendary artifact to their collection. In addition, the wicked witch hat auction combines rarity, historical significance, and a direct connection to Margaret Hamilton, making it a highlight of Hollywood collectible culture.
