For decades, Americans have counted on stores open on Thanksgiving to grab last-minute groceries, forgotten ingredients, or early holiday deals. In recent years, that familiar sight has changed. What was once a busy shopping day has become quieter, as many retailers now close to let employees enjoy the holiday with their families. Still, some stores plan to open their doors this Thanksgiving. According to reports from Parade, several major chains will welcome customers, though hours may differ by location.

This shift began in 2020 when “unprecedented times” led to widespread Thanksgiving closures. Many companies decided to keep that new tradition, turning the holiday into a break from retail instead of a shopping event. Even so, shoppers can still find stores open on Thanksgiving for those last-minute items or quick grocery runs. From convenience stores to supermarkets, a few dependable names are keeping the lights on this year.

Several grocery and convenience chains will remain open on Thanksgiving Day. Whole Foods, Kroger, and The Fresh Market expect to serve customers, often for shorter hours. Many 7-Eleven locations will also stay open, though operating times may vary. These stores open on Thanksgiving give families a backup plan for missing ingredients, extra desserts, or simple household items.

Chains such as H-E-B and Giant will adjust their schedules to balance customer needs and staff time off. H-E-B plans limited morning hours, while many Giant stores will close by 5 p.m. Checking local schedules early can help avoid the holiday rush. Even with reduced hours, these stores open on Thanksgiving make it easy to finish preparations before dinner begins.

While big-box stores like Target and Walmart will stay closed, several specialty and department stores are expected to open. Big Lots, Bass Pro Shops, and Cabela’s will welcome shoppers looking for outdoor gear, home goods, or early gifts. CVS will also keep most of its doors open, providing easy access to essentials and pharmacy services.

Thanksgiving shopping may not be as busy as it once was, but it hasn’t disappeared completely. A select number of stores open on Thanksgiving continue to serve those who need a few extra things before the feast. Whether for forgotten ingredients or last-minute gifts, these open doors keep one small piece of the holiday shopping tradition alive.
