Fans of wrestling icon Hulk Hogan were stunned by news of his sudden passing on July 24 at the age of 71. Known for his larger-than-life persona and unmatched legacy in the WWE, Hogan—born Terrence Gene Bollea—left behind a legacy that spanned decades. As tributes poured in from wrestling greats and longtime fans, many were left wondering what led to his unexpected death.
According to People, Hogan died of acute myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. Though widely regarded as a strongman even in his later years, Hogan reportedly had a private history of leukemia and atrial fibrillation, which may have contributed to his sudden death. These medical conditions had not been publicly disclosed before.
Medical History Revealed After Death
First responders arrived at Hogan’s Clearwater Beach home at 9:51 a.m. following a cardiac arrest call. Despite spending 30 minutes trying to revive him, Hogan was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The WWE later confirmed his death, praising his contributions to wrestling and pop culture. Medical records obtained by People confirmed Hogan’s wishes for cremation and revealed his long-term health issues.
Former WWE manager Jimmy Hart, who spoke with Hogan just hours before his death, said he was shocked. Hart remembered their last conversation as upbeat and optimistic, making the loss feel even more sudden. Eric Bischoff, another close friend, also shared that Hogan had grown hesitant about visitors in his final days due to his weakened state. Hogan reportedly said, “I’m kind of embarrassed for you to see me this way.”
Hogan’s Health Decline and Enduring Legacy
Rumors about Hogan’s declining health had circulated as early as June. Despite public reassurances from his team, close friends now admit they had no idea how serious things had become. Bischoff noted that during their final visit, Hogan had trouble speaking but still carried his trademark spirit. “It was work for him to have a conversation, but he was the same guy,” he recalled.
The wrestling legend had endured 25 surgeries in the last decade alone, including procedures on his back, knees, hips, and shoulders. Despite these physical challenges and multiple public controversies, Hogan remained a defining figure in wrestling history. He is survived by his wife, Sky Daily; two ex-wives; and children, Brooke and Nick.
