Since 1969, Sesame Street has been part of millions of kids’ childhoods. With characters like Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Oscar the Grouch, the show has made learning fun for more than five decades. From teaching ABCs to talking about healthy food and good hygiene, it has always found smart and playful ways to help children grow.

Over the years, the show has won hundreds of awards and introduced new characters, songs, and lessons that kids and parents have loved. However, the show will stop streaming new episodes on Max. Fans of the show have therefore wondered if this is the end of the 55-year run of the show, which has made people’s childhoods.

No, Sesame Street isn’t going anywhere. In May 2025, Sesame Workshop made a deal with Netflix to continue the show. This means more episodes are on the way, just on a different platform. Season 56 will arrive on Netflix in late 2025 with some new changes.

The show will still have fun segments like Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck, but now it’ll also include new short stories that are just 11 minutes long. Netflix gives the show a chance to reach kids all over the world. Even though the new episodes will stream on Netflix, children in the U.S. will still be able to watch Sesame Street for free on public TV. So the show will stay close to home while also going global.

Why is ‘Sesame Street’ leaving Warner Bros. Discovery?

The team at Max decided not to renew their contract with the Sesame Workshop to keep streaming or funding Sesame Street on their platform. They’re now focusing more on shows for older viewers, like their upcoming Harry Potter series.

A spokesperson said the decision was based on what viewers want and how they use the service. Even though Max won’t stream new episodes anymore, some older seasons will still stay on the platform until 2027. That means fans can still watch classic moments while the show gets ready for its next chapter on Netflix.
