The documentary Garland Jeffreys: The King of In Between, produced and directed by Claire Jeffrey alongside Steven Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, his wife Maureen Van Zandt, Danny Zelisko, Kathleen Lavelle, and Bill Tureby, who all served as co-executive producers, is scheduled to premiere on June 6 at New York City’s IFC Center before becoming available for streaming by August 2025.

The documentary delves into Jeffreys’s life and career as an artist in the music industry, questioning how a musician with such extraordinary lyrical and musical gifts remained highly underappreciated despite creating music that remains very relevant to today’s political and cultural landscape.

Claire Jeffreys gives reason for producing a documentary about her husband

Claire noted she took up the documentary project to increase the audience for her husband’s works, so his artistic talent would be given the credit it deserves. She explained that having spent more than four decades with her husband, she had seen personally how his music connects with those who find it, even though they are always surprised at its lack of publicity. Motivated by the limitations, she created the film to introduce Garland to a broader public to showcase how his music, deeply rooted in themes of race and social justice, feels more relevant than ever.

Claire also stated that over time, her motivation changed from merely trying to inspire an appreciation for Garland’s hard-earned accomplishments to using it to encourage people to celebrate their own achievements, whether in art or everyday life.
