Imagine living two lives in one year, on the same clock. That’s what 1985 was like for Michael J. Fox. One moment, he was Alex P. Keaton in a sitcom family. Next, he was Marty McFly, speeding through time in a DeLorean. Now, at 63, he’s ready to tell the full story.
Fox’s new book, Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum, will be out this October. The memoir, co-written with Nelle Fortenberry, looks back at the busiest season of his life. From daytime shoots on Family Ties to overnight filming on Back to the Future, he barely had time to sleep, yet somehow, he made it work.

This isn’t just a memoir. Fox calls it a time machine, one that opens up a world many have never seen. The book includes fresh interviews with people from both sets and uncovers moments fans never knew about.
Back in 1985, few people knew how stretched he was. By day, he delivered punchlines in front of a studio audience. By night, he was running from the past and the Future on movie sets. “Time went rogue and took me with it,” Fox says. He also adds a twist of humor, quoting Einstein: “The only reason for time is so everything doesn’t happen at once.” But for Fox, it almost did.

Future Boy also touches on life beyond the screen. Fox has faced Parkinson’s disease for over 30 years, yet he remains one of the most inspiring voices in Hollywood. Through his foundation, he has helped raise millions for research. While his previous books, like Lucky Man and No Time Like the Future, shared his health struggles. This time, he’s taking a different route.
“This book is less about events and more about meaning,” he explains. “I ask questions we all ask, Who am I? Where am I going?” The memoir also includes behind-the-scenes stories and brand-new interviews with cast members from both shows. The book comes just as Back to the Future turns 40 next year. Future Boy will be published on October 14, 2025, and is available for preorder now.
