Zak Starkey, son of legendary Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, has officially parted ways with The Who after 29 years behind the drums. The 59-year-old musician broke his silence following swirling reports that he was fired from the rock band after recent performances. In a statement, Starkey emphasized that he is proud of his legacy and relationship with the band.

While some headlines suggest tensions led to his exit, Starkey offered a more balanced view. He cited a serious medical issue earlier this year involving blood clots in his leg, which he says is now fully healed. Still, he acknowledged recent friction and said he plans to take a break, focus on other creative projects, and finish his autobiography.

Starkey’s time with The Who began in 1996, and he has been considered a vital part of their live sound ever since. However, recent reports indicate that frontman Roger Daltrey expressed frustration during the band’s Royal Albert Hall show, claiming he could hardly hear himself over the drums. Starkey later referenced these comments in a tongue-in-cheek Instagram post, alluding to his departure.

Despite the rumors, Starkey maintains that his performance has never been an issue until now, even expressing surprise that anyone would question it after decades with the band. He stressed that he remains their biggest fan and holds no animosity.

A representative for The Who confirmed that the decision to part ways was mutual, describing it as a collective decision. The rep added that the band admires Starkey’s contribution and wishes him well in his future endeavors. Similarly, Starkey’s camp called it a typical rock ‘n’ roll fallout, noting that healing will take time.

As the dust settles, Starkey is shifting focus to new musical ventures, including the May release of a project with Noel Gallagher. For fans, the end of an era comes with bittersweet emotions, gratitude for the music, and curiosity about what’s next for both Starkey and The Who.
