Although it has been over ten years since the entertainment world lost Robin Williams, his influence is still very much felt by colleagues and fans alike. One person who cannot forget the late actor in a rush is Nathan Lane, who starred with Williams in the 1996 comedy The Birdcage.
In a recent interview, Lane, who portrayed Albert Goldman opposite Armand Goldman, Williams’s character, spoke candidly about his collaboration with the legendary actor. He disclosed that Williams personally chose to star alongside him, even though he had a list of very talented performers to pick from. This choice would result in one of the most famous on-screen couples in comedy history.
Nathan Lane says he was cast in ‘The Birdcage’ due to Robin Williams’ influence
During an episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast Dinner’s On Me, the actor shared details of the casting process of The Birdcage. He explained that the film’s director, Mike Nichols, had initially considered casting either Billy Crystal or Robert Redford for the role, but he was selected despite being a relatively unknown actor at the time with no major film credits to his name.
Lane clarified that Williams, who was already a well-known actor at the time, allowed him to take the role even though he could have easily insisted on pairing up with a more prominent actor. The actor considered the significance of William’s support, pointing out that it was extremely uncommon for a star of Williams’ caliber to stand up for someone who had little or no track record in Hollywood.
