David Schwimmer was asked to host an episode of Saturday Night Live in 1995, which he accepted. During his recent appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he admitted that he made a big mistake while at it, although he considered the offer a huge honor, especially because he was the first cast member from Friends to be contacted.
A year before he anchored the SNL episode, David Schwimmer made his debut as Ross Geller on Friends, making him an already popular face. He made time out of his tight schedule to be on SNL as he had to be on the sitcom set in Los Angeles on Tuesdays.
What was David Schwimmer’s big mistake on ‘SNL?’
David flew from Los Angeles to Studio 8H in New York to film his Saturday Night Live episode; however, he did not arrive at the location until Thursday, offending the crew. He recalled entering the writers’ room and meeting a cold atmosphere of which he had no idea.
The 58-year-old realized years later that SNL hosts are meant to arrive on the Monday before the show, but it was not his fault as nobody mentioned the rule to him. David said the two days spent on set was traumatizing, but he managed to get through it just fine.
David Schwimmer will return to ‘SNL’ for their 50th anniversary special
Despite his flop three decades ago, David got invited to SNL’s 50th anniversary special, which is set for February 16. He looks forward to attending; however, he is unsure whether his invite is genuine and does not know what to do. David told show host Stephen Colbert that some intern probably mailed him like everyone else who previously anchored the show.
SNL will celebrate its fifth decade with a three-hour live prime-time show on NBC and Peacock. The four-part docuseries, SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night will also premiere on Peacock this month. Meanwhile, David recently appeared on Disney +’s Goosebumps: The Vanishing, where he plays Anthony Brewer.
