Martin Short

Martin Short appeared as a waiter in the “5-Timers Club” sketch alongside Justin Timberlake when the latter hosted Saturday Night Live for the fifth time in 2013. Interestingly, Martin has also achieved the same milestone as he was officially announced as a member of the SNL 5-Timers club.

The last SNL episode was a highly anticipated one because it was not only the final episode of the year but also served as Martin Short’s official induction into the SNL 5-Timers Club. After 38 years since he first hosted this event, he was finally inducted, and this places him in the league of other SNL hosts like Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, and Justin Timberlake, who were all present to celebrate Martin Short’s induction. Singer Hozier was also present to entertain guests; it was a fantastic way to end the year.

An SNL 5-Timers Induction is always one to look forward to, and this particular event did not disappoint. The evening’s celebration began with Tom Hanks introducing Martin Short to the exclusive SNL 5-Timers Club. Joined by fellow club members like Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, Tina Fey, and John Mulaney, the group celebrated Short’s achievement with their traditional sketch. Each member shared funny “confessions” from their time hosting the show multiple times. Tina Fey kicked things off with a joke: “In this club, you can be completely honest,” which led to several funny confessions by the comedians present.

The sketch came to an end with Jimmy Fallon appearing to present Short with his official 5-Timers Club jacket, teasing, “I’d like to present to you the official 5-Timers Club jacket, in exactly your size, a women’s small.” Short struggled to put the jacket on, much to the amusement of the crowd, before joining the group for the ceremonial “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” shout.

Short also took the stage for his opening monologue, in which he talked about his career and the honor of joining the SNL 5-Timers Club. He also sang a parody of “We Need a Little Christmas,” where he humorously shared his advice for surviving the holiday season. Apart from Short’s Christmas parody, Hozier also set the mood and impressed the audience with his performance of “Too Sweet” and “Fairytale of New York.”

SNL 5-Timers Club finally welcomes Martin Short

There’s no surprise that there is usually so much fanfare and excitement for SNL 5-Timers’ induction. The 5-Timers Club is a highly regarded exclusive group for only those who have hosted the show five or more times and it is a big deal in the world of television and comedy. Over the years, this club has included some of the biggest names in entertainment, such as Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and most recently, Martin Short.

Martin Short hosted his first SNL on December 6, 1986, and since then, he has returned to the stage for a total of five hosting appearances, which qualified him for induction into the club. His past shows have been marked by remarkable sketches, especially his portrayal of Ed Grimley, a character he introduced as a cast member in the 1980s. After hosting in 1996, 2012, and 2022, Short’s induction into the 5-Timers Club in 2024 has been a highly anticipated moment. From a cast member to a five-timer, Martin Short has come a long way. His induction not only honors his career but also celebrates his influence on the show.
