Macy’s has announced the closure of some of its stores, 66 in total, to improve declining sales and get rid of under-producing stores. By monitoring the progress of each store, this closure is a way to maximize their profit and focus their resources on the most important locations.
Due to the rise of online shopping apps and other large stores that are faster and less expensive, Macy’s is losing more customers. However, these challenges are not peculiar to Macy’s alone, as other companies, including Sears and JCPenney, are also experiencing similar problems, with some even going bankrupt.
Macy’s declining sales
In February 2023, Macy’s opened up about its plan to close 150 stores that were not performing well by the end of 2026 as it would help them focus on stores that are bringing profits, hence attracting more customers and improving the shopping experience of their customers.
Although Macy’s is closing due to a number of reasons, including declining sales as a result of the smaller department store chain and competition from big stores, the company will begin a clearance sale this January, and it will run for 8 – 12 weeks. The stores will be open to attend to customers coming in during this period. Meanwhile, other stores not marked for closure will continue to operate smoothly. Here is a list of stores to be closed:
