Robert Plant got candid about the reality of losing his five-year-old son Karac Pendragon in 1977 and the making of the track “All My Love” as a tribute to him. He opened up to Dan Rather of The Big Interview, noting that his Led Zeppelin bandmates stood by him during difficult times.
The 76-year-old shared his late child with his first wife, Maureen Wilson, whom he divorced in 1983 due to trouble balancing fame and family. Plant also reflected on being a member of the rock band, which he left in the ‘80s after their split.
What happened to Robert Plant’s son?
Plant’s son, Karac, caught a viral stomach infection while his father was on a United States tour with his fellow Led Zeppelin bandmates. Upon hearing that Karac passed away, Plant rushed back to England, torn between leaving music altogether to focus on family and keeping at his fast-rising career.
Plant and Maureen had other children together, including their first, Carmen Jane Plant, who is now a professional dancer, and Logan Romero Plant, the founder of London’s Beavertown Brewery. After Robert and Maureen’s split, the former had an affair with his sister-in-law Shirley Wilson, and they share a son named Jesse Lee together.
‘All My Love’ was a tribute to Karac Pendragon
“All My Love” featured on Led Zeppelin’s In Through Out The Door album, counting as one of the band’s most emotional songs. It featured deeply vulnerable lines from Plant as he expressed feelings of loss and pain. “Through the distance of our smiles / I’ll be with you, darling soon,” he wrote.
Although it has been almost five decades since the painful incident, Plant still feels the hurt of losing Karac but is grateful for his brother who came two years later. “He channeled his grief in his art. Led Zeppelin invented the power ballad,” a fan noted.
