Boyd Holbrook has surprised fans with his transformation for Bob Dylan‘s biopic, Complete Unknown, where he played Johnny Cash. Boyd Holbrook has always been praised for his physical and emotional dedication to his roles. The actor has appeared in movies such as Logan and Narcos, and his performance earned him credit from critics.
However, his role as Johnny Cash blew people’s minds because he changed in so many ways that it was hard to identify him. The biopic focuses on Bob Dylan, but his portrayal of Cash gained so much attention and praise that Variety called him a “scene-stealer.”
Boyd Holbrook went through a true physical transformation to play Johnny Cash
Boyd Holbrook underwent significant physical changes to portray Johnny Cash in Complete Unknown. To match Cash’s appearance during his amphetamine era, Holbrook started filming 10 pounds underweight. However, director James Mangold requested he gain at least 8 pounds to round out his face. Holbrook also wore a prosthetic nose to better capture Cash’s features.
Holbrook also worked hard to replicate Cash’s voice. He revealed that he studied two short interviews from Pete Seeger’s show, memorizing them word for word to master Cash’s cadence and speaking style. He practiced breathing techniques to replicate Cash’s hollow, resonant tone to ensure his voice matched the singer’s unique voice.
Boyd Holbrook learned music for his role as Johnny Cash
Holbrook also had to learn music to play Johnny Cash. He revealed he had some experience with playing the guitar; he admitted that he still struggled with it. However, the industry strikes in 2023 gave him an additional four months to practice. Holbrook worked on mastering Cash’s guitar-playing style, focusing on the rhythm-heavy strokes that defined his sound, especially for a scene at the Newport Folk Festival.
Holbrook’s preparation extended beyond physical and vocal transformations. He studied Cash’s mannerisms and performances and accurately portrayed the musician’s character. His performance was simply electric in the biopic, and it sealed his reputation as one of Hollywood’s best.
