Kurt Russell landed the role of stuntman Mike in Death Proof, although he did not expect that director Quentin Tarantino would select him for the part. Thanks to his industry colleague and friend Freddy Rodriquez, Kurt was able to impress Quentin.
Kurt and Quentin worked together multiple times after Death Proof, establishing an admirable work relationship. In 2019, the renowned director told Entertainment Weekly that Kurt was the youngest person he could work with who could relate to some of his storylines.
How did Kurt Russell start working with Quentin Tarantino?
Freddie called to warn Kurt that Quentin would approach him with an offer to star in Death Proof. He added that the role was originally meant for Mickey Rourke or Ving Rhames. As expected, Quentin presented his offer, selling the character stuntman Mike to Kurt, who accepted.
Death Proof tells the story of a stunt wheelman who uses his car to harm and murder women in crashes until a group of his last victims fight back. Death Proof is not one of Quentin’s best works, but it opened the door for better hit movies from Kurt and Quentin.
Kurt Russell and Quentin Tarantino collaborate again
Quentin asked Kurt to consider his role as stuntman Mike a part of his classic rogues gallery, and the actor obliged. The duo will cross paths again eight years later for The Hateful Eight, which stars Kurt as bounty hunter John “Hangman” Ruth. It showed Quentin’s range as it was a successful Western receiving multiple Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Cinematography.
Kurt and Quentin last collaborated in 2019 on Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, with the former playing narrator and stunt coordinator Randy. Kurt has gushed about the adventurous feeling of working with Quentin, noting that he was fun to see in action.
