Why Does Everyone Hate The Song ‘Wonderful Christmastime’?

by Peace A

Wonderful Christmastime

Paul McCartney is one of music history’s hitmakers; however, his Christmas song is not making it to the list of fan-favorite holiday songs. Paul recorded the tune while doing solo sessions for his McCartney II album and released it in November 1979.

Paul was reportedly behind all the instruments, including the acoustic piano, bass, guitar, and drums, and wrote, performed, and produced the track all on his own. He also employed a synthesizer, which was futuristic for music-making in the late ‘70s.

Holiday songs are supposed to evoke emotion and cheer in listeners. However, Paul’s “Wonderful Christmastime” was flat and lacked variation. It is arguably his worst work, and in his defense, he simply created it in the comfort of his home studio in Sussex, England.

The holiday track marked a decline in Paul’s career, along with underwhelming releases like “Give Ireland Back to the Irish” and “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” It also lacked replay value and felt like an unneeded addition to his Wings album. Regardless of the flop, Paul considered the making of ‘Wonderful Christmastime” an opportunity to try new sounds and create without external interference.

What did Paul McCartney think of ‘Wonderful Christmastime’

Paul claimed he wrote “Wonderful Christmastime” to capture the party aspect of the season, adding that he had a picture of Liverpool Christmas family celebrations while writing the lyrics. This explains the part that said, “The mood is right, let’s raise a glass, the spirit’s up.”

While Paul was inspired by his childhood in the UK to create festive music, he admitted that his dad hated Christmas carols and used to make fun of them. He recalled how his dad would even give him some money to leave the house and go sing in the next street.
