Alex Van Halen is currently promoting his new book, Brothers, which is a tribute to his late brother Eddie Van Halen. It has been available for sale since October, giving readers insights into their relationship as brothers, their talents, and how they blended them to make a music career.
During a recent interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN, Alex admitted that he is still dealing with losing Eddie. He discussed the illness leading to his demise, which he believes was fueled by drug abuse. The 71-year-old was present in the room with other loved ones when Eddie breathed his last.
Alex Van Halen reflects on his brother’s passing
Eddie battled lung cancer for years after dealing with throat cancer and tongue cancer, which led to one-third of his tongue getting removed in the early 2000s. Unlike the first two, Alex was unable to recover from his affected lungs, with the tumor spreading to his brain.
He died of a stroke in October 2020, and Alex recalled how uneventful the moment was as he and those present sat down, dazed by the sudden occurrence. He praised his late friend for fighting until the end despite his many troubles.

Alex believed Eddie would have lived longer had he not been addicted to drugs. He said Eddie’s life was about searching for something he did not know, and despite his effort to save his brother, it was always his choice to adhere or not.
Alex continues to face the hurt he feels, noting that he will not run from his pain of loss, which he described as overwhelming. The father of two admitted that he breaks down uncontrollably whenever he is alone with his thoughts or listening to Eddie’s music.
