Quincy Jones helped Michael Jackson create three albums, Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad, fostering a solid relationship between them. Despite how close they were, Jackson was reportedly shy and uncomfortable around Quincy, such that he could not sing in the late music producer’s presence.
Quincy said Jackson had to sing from a dark room or behind a chair during their rehearsals, but he enjoyed working with the King of Pop regardless. More people, including comedian Eddie Murphy, have confirmed Jackson’s shy nature in the past, noting that he hated crowds and too much attention.
Quincy Jones was accommodating of Michael Jackson’s shyness
Despite having to deal with a renowned singer hiding in corners during practice, Quincy was patient with Jackson. He recalled having to cover his eyes while Jackson sang with his back turned to him, as he could not bear to look at Quincy or be looked at by him.
Quincy found ways to make Jackson feel comfortable, such as bringing down the keys and making changes to the tempo or range to improve his voice. Aside from being his producer, Quincy was a big fan of Jackson and considered him the biggest entertainer on the planet.
Quincy Jones enjoyed making music with Michael Jackson
Quincy recalled his first time working with Jackson on Off the Wall, noting that his A-team crew, including one of the best songwriters ever, Rod Temperton, were involved in the project. The late composer did not expect the album to perform as well as it did, moving Jackson’s career to a higher level.
Next came Thriller, which Quincy believed took Jackson to legend status and made him the musical heartbeat of the ‘80s. He compared his acclaim with the icons from the past, like Elvis Presley in the ‘50s, and Frank Sinatra in the ‘60s. Jackson’s music continued well into the late 2000s, and has remained evergreen since his passing in 2009.
