Billie Lourd is celebrating her late mother on what would have been her 68th birthday had she not died of a cardiac arrest. She took a photo from Carrie’s past anniversary to Instagram, where she was captured blowing out a cake while Billie looked on admiringly.
Billie accompanied the throwback photo with a lengthy note, admitting that she did not want to celebrate at first. She used the opportunity to encourage those who have addicts as loved ones, noting that she tried to help Carrie but to no avail.
Billie Lourd reflects on Carrie Fisher’s addiction
Substances like cocaine, heroin, and MDMA were found in Carrie’s system after her death, proving she was still knee-deep in her drug addiction at the time. Billie noted that her mother was open about her struggles, and she tried her best to help, but to no avail.
She advised addicts to take a cue from Carrie and speak up about their troubles. “Same goes for those of us affected by that struggle,” Billie quipped. Fans took to the comments to sympathize with Billie and commended her vulnerability on such a sensitive day.
It took Billie some strength to wish Carrie for her posthumous birthday, as she woke up sad and unmotivated. Despite being nearly a decade since Carrie passed, Billie still desires the warmth of her mother’s love, just like she did that morning. “I try to celebrate her as much as possible, but today I really wanted to celebrate her with her,” she explained.
She did a Google search about drug overdose deaths per year, which is over a hundred thousand people, and felt the need to pass a message. While Carrie was alive, she confessed to having Cannabis for the first time at 13 and having cocaine on the set of Star Wars just to feel high. “Sadly my mom couldn’t ever escape her addiction,” Billie said.
