One hospital was positively rocking out recently after welcoming two illustrious newcomers into the world. In Alabama, two separate families gave birth to a baby, one named Johnny Cash, and the other named June Carter, both born on the same day in the exact same hospital.
Meet Nicole Davis and Sophie Clark, two moms who just happened to name their newborns, who share the birthday of April 10, after one of the most iconic duos in music history. When both moms found out, they spoke with Good Morning America to recount the meeting they couldn’t resist having once they learned about the remarkable coincidence.

“I was very shocked,” shared 22-year-old Clark of the big revelation that she and another mom named their newborn after a country music legend, both so inextricably linked in history. Clark is the one who named her newborn June Carter. “I was so excited when I found out.”

“I thought it was a bizarre coincidence,” added Davis. She shares baby Johnny with her husband Johnny Lee Davis Jr. The couple are raising 12 children. “And I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’ When I realized they named her June Carter and we named our baby Johnny Cash, and that [they were born the same day], it got a little bit more intensified at that point.”
The family is actually quite blended. Davis explained, “My husband has six from his prior marriage and I have five from my prior marriage, and they range in ages from 21 down to eight.”
Two families becoming one once again
Johnny Cash and June Carter were country singer-songwriters with multiple Grammy wins between the two of them. The two got married in 1968 and remained together until June’s death in June 2003 at the age of 73; Cash died months later, in September of that year at the age of 71.
Pure serendipity saw both families land on the names June Carter and Johnny Cash at the Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children. For Clark, she drew inspiration from the name of her husband, Carter John Austin Clark; her sister helped the couple figure out the newborn’s first name.
From there, “I just started calling her June Carter and everybody loved it,” shared Sophie. “Our families loved it and it just kind of fell into place.” In contrast to Nicole Davis, Clark is a first-time mom.
The hospital staff helped the two mothers arrange a meeting and for these two families, there will be no final goodbye. “I don’t imagine there’s ever any point in time where we can go separate ways,” said Davis. The two moms plan on staying in contact. “We’re on other ends of the spectrum as far as parents go. We’re really far down the road in parenting and they’re just getting started. And so yes, I’m very excited about staying friends and making opportunities for these guys to spend time together and grow up together.”
That’s in keeping with the country music legends who brought them together in the first place. Both Johnny Cash and June Carter had a blended family. Cash had four children with his first wife, Vivian Liberto: Rosanne, Kathy, Cindy, and Tara. June Carter had two children of her own from a previous relationship, Carlene and Rosie. Then, the music partners had one more child together, John Carter Cash.
