86-year-old Jane Fonda has not slowed down in her 65 years in showbiz. On Wednesday, Fonda attended the TIME Earth Awards Gala, and this time, she was seen joined by her granddaughter, 21-year-old Viva Vadim.
Fonda’s first marriage was to screenwriter Roger Vadim Plemiannikov, to whom she was wed from 1965 to ’73. Together, they had Vanessa Vadim, who had Viva with music artist Matt Arnett. Already, Viva has shown Fonda’s devotion to climate activism, and Fonda cites her grandchildren as a main reason for her own dedication to protest.
Fonda and Viva appeared on the red carpet together in New York earlier this week for the second-ever of this event. The gala honors individuals dedicated to “climate justice,” a cause Fonda has championed at several protests over the years.
At the event, Fonda wore a vivid purple three-piece suit with silver strappy sandals. She wore her gray hair in loose, styled waves around her face. Besides Fonda, Viva wore a plain black dress and comfortable heels. Her own dark hair was tied back and her outfit was accented by modest, shimmering jewelry. The two were seen holding hands as they posed for pictures.
Appearances featuring grandmother and granddaughter are not the most common, but Viva does have a history of appearing on the red carpet alongside the comedy icon, including when she was a child. One photo of the pair shows them in a similar scenario, holding hands on the red carpet while Fonda beams at the camera.
Back in 2019, Fonda took to Instagram to celebrate Viva and the work she and many others do for environmental protection.
“With my granddaughter Viva Vadim,” Fonda captioned a post showing herself and Viva donning matching red coats, “who got arrested with 38 others today. Follow @firedrillfriday to take action against climate change.”
That same year, Fonda vowed to get arrested every Friday to argue for reduced use of fossil fuels. “The only problem for me is I’m old,” Fonda admitted. But she keeps at it for her grandchildren. “I don’t know how you could not [protest]. I have grandchildren. I love animals, I love nature,” she told Page Six. “We’re going to destroy it all if we don’t. It’s all hands on deck right now, it’s urgent, urgent and everyone has to join in right now.”
