Beyonce’s Revision Of ‘Jolene’ Receives Backlash Despite Praise From Dolly Parton

Beyonce recently released her country-infused album Cowboy Carter, and on the track list was a revised version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” which has received mixed reactions from listeners. The recreated fan favorite was endorsed by Dolly, who praised the cover on social media, saying, “Wow, I just heard ‘Jolene.’ Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble, and she deserves it!”

Contrary to Dolly’s thoughts, some fans are giving Beyonce a hard time with negative criticism for the song, which its listening contributed to the whooping 76.13 million streams Cowboy Carter received upon its debut. “Sorry, Dolly, although I know you HAD to say that, I strongly disagree. Beyonce’s version was absolutely awful,” a critic said.

Fans react to Beyonce’s ‘Jolene’ cover

Taking to social media, people held nothing back in pointing out their opinions about Beyonce’s cover of Dolly’s hit song. “Dolly is a sweet old soul and generous…but Beyonce has not only ruined the song but is trying to sully up Country Music,” someone noted, and another agreed, saying, “Sorry, Dolly, but no one should ever ruin your song, Jolene, no matter how powerful they are in the music industry. That song has always been special just the way it is.”

Someone asserted that a cover was nice, but Beyonce was not the fitting artiste for one. “If someone is going to cover a Dolly Parton song, they have got to be a powerhouse like her. Ex. Whitney Houston!” they suggested. “Beyonce is no Dolly, and definitely no Whitney.” “Dolly is so sweet. She’d support and sing with anyone, even on her own song. It doesn’t make Beyoncé any more a country singer, though. Beyoncé is a rhinestone while Dolly is a diamond,” a fourth person added.

Also included in Cowboy Carter was a collaboration with Dolly’s goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, for “II Most Wanted.” The song stood out on the iTunes charts, and Miley took to Instagram to express adoration for Beyonce. “I’ve loved Beyoncé since long before I had the opportunity to meet & work with her,” she wrote alongside an America-themed cover photo of the iconic singer. “My admiration runs so much deeper now that I’ve created alongside of her. To everyone who spent time making this song so special, thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

In Miley’s comments section, more fans were offended by Beyonce’s acclaim to country through music, saying the mother of three “is not country and never has been in the 25 years I’ve lived.”

“This is for money, ’cause the only good thing about that song was Miley. Not her. And Texas. Show me a Texan from LA,” they added. Thankfully, more people had kind words for both ladies, calling Cowboy Carter “a next level experience with solid production, and thought put into everything.” “…A complete vibe of songs. Really damn good,” a follower quipped.
