As a member of the Television Hall of Fame, journalist Katie Couric has a lot to be proud of, but she is now positively elated to be promoted to the position of grandmother for the very first time. Her first daughter, Elinor Tully “Ellie” Monahan, just welcomed a baby boy, and Grandma Katie is basking in every second with the latest addition to the family.
Couric tied the knot with her first husband, Jay Monahan, in 1989. The two became parents in 1991 with the birth of Ellie and they welcomed their second daughter, Caroline “Carrie” in 1996. Sadly, at the age of just 42, Jay died of colorectal cancer. Couric’s grandson has been named in tribute to his maternal grandfather.

Couric’s 32-year-old daughter Ellie became a first-time mom on Saturday. The following day, Couric announced the big event online, along with the newborn’s name and some beautiful photos of the wondrous day. They show the happy parents along with close family members awed and grinning at the bundle of joy.

“John Albert Dobrosky was born on his due date, Saturday, March 23rd at 8:23 am, just shy of seven pounds,” revealed Couric. “He will be called Jay in honor of his maternal grandfather.”
She went on, “Mom and Dad are over the moon, I am thrilled to have my first grandchild, Carrie can’t wait to be a cool Aunt and Molner is enjoying handing out cigars. We feel so blessed. We’ll have more tomorrow in Wake-Up Call.”
Celebrating the granny to be, now the granny that is
It was a bit of a bumpy road to get here – not regarding the mom or baby’s health, as far as Couric and her family have shared. But rather, the big pregnancy reveal didn’t quite unfold according to plan. Couric found out while attending a Taylor Swift Eras tour with her daughter, and the tour has had a tradition of bringing and exchanging friendship bracelets. Ellie used this practice to send her mother a message announcing the news.
Only one hangup: when Couric was presented with her beaded friendship bracelet, she had trouble interpreting what it spelled out. “Brand, brandy, B, granny,” she puzzled aloud in footage that captured the moment Couric was told she would become a grandmother. Finally, she was told that it spelled out “Granny to be.” Then, Ellie outright said, “I’m pregnant.”
For a moment, her face went blank, then she exclaimed, “You are? Wow!” The family opted to leave the gender as a surprise until the day of delivery.
