Kate Middletons shares a new video statement / BBC Studios
Amidst an absence of formal updates and sightings surrounding Kate Middleton, a video has reportedly been shared now of Middleton announcing that she has been diagnosed with cancer. In the video, she also informs viewers that she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy.
The video was released on Friday and comes two months after Middleton underwent “major” abdominal surgery for intense pain. The cancer was discovered in post-operative tests after that same procedure earlier this year. Here is her statement.
Kate Middleton confirmed her cancer diagnosis in her Friday video and shared that she has been receiving chemotherapy since February, weeks after her January 14 procedure. “This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” said Middleton, now stylized Catherine, Princess of Wales.
In the footage, which had been captured on Wednesday, she went on, “As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment.”
Back when she was first addressing her abdominal pain, “at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous.”
The subsequent radio silence and limited updates that related to Kate after her surgery last winter sparked questions at an exponential rate. The few images that did release were met with mixed reactions, including a grainy paparazzi shot of Middleton in a car, joined by her mother. Many British news outlets did not publish the image, citing privacy concerns.
Then, a British Mother’s Day photo shared on March 10 was met with skepticism, as royals author Tina Brown went onto CBS Mornings to share her belief that the image was doctored from several other pictures. According to TIME magazine, by that evening, Reuters, the Associated Press, and Agence France-Press issued “kill orders” instructing clients to remove that image. In that case, Middleton issued a statement explaining, “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing.”
Now, in this recent video, she has assured the public, “I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits. Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.”
In the wake of her medical procedures, which came around the same time King Charles addressed his own prostate cancer, Kate said, “I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery. It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.”
