Mariska Hargitay is channeling the era of classic Hollywood. Hargitay, a mainstay of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since 1999, has given fans a major dose of nostalgia with her latest photo that channels both the Golden Age of Hollywood – literally, with that sunset hue – and Hargitay’s famous mom, Jayne Mansfield.
Hargitay is very familiar with being told she looks like Mansfield, who died in a brutal car crash when Mansfield was 34 and Hargitay just three. “Someone once said about [remembering] my mother: ‘All you have to do is look in the mirror,'” Hargitay shared, adding, “She’s with me still.” On social media, Hargitay taps into that to keep her mother’s memory alive and share her legacy with the world.

Earlier this week, Hargitay took to Instagram to share a photo for Entertainment Weekly that features her in a simple yet classy white dress accented by a thin belt. Hargitay stands out against the dark background and is positioned to look up and into the distance with an intense look, made all the more powerful by the deep red lipstick she wears. Her hair is left in loose brown waves, pulled back just enough to reveal a dangling pearl earring.

Tying it all together is the gentle, fuzzy glow effect that evokes memories of the Golden Age of Hollywood and of Mansfield during the height of her fame as a model. Hargitay credits the team who created this powerful shot in the captions, saying, “Thank you to @jeaninelobell and @miasantiagohair for whipping up this magic.”
Hargitay carries Mansfield’s legacy with her in several ways
She tagged this recent post, “#IGotItFromMyMama,” which is a tag Hargitay has used throughout the years for whenever she’s channeling Mansfield. Her followers certainly noticed the resemblance, with one comment reading, “Mansfield/Hargitay genetics for the WIN.” Another agreed, “Your mamma shines through you. I know she’s so proud!!!!” A separate comment appreciated the nostalgic look of the photo, noting, “Old Hollywood glamour. Such a goddess!”
Hargitay knows she looks like her, but she also wants to use her platform to tell the world who her mother is.
“My mother was this amazing, beautiful, glamorous sex symbol — but people didn’t know that she played the violin and had a 160 IQ and had five kids and loved dogs,” explained Hargitay. “She was just so ahead of her time. She was an inspiration, she had this appetite for life, and I think I share that with her.”
