Fans Slam Jason Bateman For Apparently Mocking Christina Applegate’s Appearance At The Emmys

Christina Applegate attended the 75th Emmy Awards ceremony with her daughter on Monday. The Across The Moon star, who walked with a cane due to multiple sclerosis, was assigned to present the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

As she made for the stage, Applegate received a standing ovation from the audience, and host Anthony Anderson dashed to support her. “You’re totally shaming me with disability by standing up!” she joked, adding that her “body not by Ozempic.”

After the heartfelt moment when Applegate awarded The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, Ozark star Jason Bateman did what fans alleged to be a subliminal jab at Applegate. “Was that guy eating and licking his fingers; winning and kissing his wife with food on his mouth and still chewing food on stage. TF,” someone asked. “Were those not so subtle digs at Christina Applegate, or am I missing a joke?” another curious fan inquired.

Many agreed that Jason was trying to make fun of Applegate’s appearance and chided him on X, formerly Twitter, as the event unfolded. “@TheEmmys writers…having #JasonBateman use an incredible actress with MS as the butt of a joke and targeting her physical appearance is beyond poor taste. She’s a powerful, talented, and amazing icon,” someone noted, asking organizers to do better. “That was a cheap shot at Christina Applegate #Emmys,” a second person agreed.

Applegate’s health battle

Applegate shared her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021 via a touching post on X. “Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS. It’s been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition,” she stated. “It’s been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some asshole blocks it.”

The symptoms had been evident since filming the third season of Dead To Me when she would go off-balance while dancing; however, she did not pay much mind to the signs. She was also struggling with playing tennis and developed numbness and tingling in her extremities. She told The New York Times she’s “never going to accept” her condition. “There was the sense of, ‘Well, let’s get her some medicine so she can get better,’ and there is no better,” she said. “I’m pissed.”
