There is a wave of self-expression hitting the beauty and lifestyle niche, and the oldies are not left out. Before now, older women resorted to the signature “granny haircut” once they hit a certain age, but that is changing as well.
Hairstylists are now encouraging the elderly to get playful with their hair, referencing older style icons to them for some inspo. “When we’re changing our hairstyle, our age doesn’t have to decide whether we go for long or short hair,” stylist Mahogany Grace says.

“I always think of the women of Advanced Style on Instagram and how cool their hair always looks with their outfits,” Luisa said. Other go-to examples include the late Vivienne Westwood, who rocked her daring bright orange hair. Another is Michele Lamy, a 79-year-old French fashion designer with raven hair. “It all just emanates fearlessness,” she added.
Your hair changes everything
A haircut has the power to take not just your look, but also your mood from basic to interesting. “A big haircut can really change up the energy in your life,” Nikki Providence said. “If things feel stagnant, sometimes a haircut can shake everything loose.”
With aging comes changes in body, skin, and hair, but with an expert touch, aging people no longer have to play within a box when it comes to personal style. “Try chatting with a couple of professionals to get ideas on how to style it based on its current condition,” Grace advised.
Stylist Akihisa Yamaguchi believes that it is “possible to get your desired volume, texture and have fuller looks, while avoiding something that feels like an ‘old lady style.’”
