Courteney Cox Recreates Hilarious ‘Friends’ Moment 19 Years Later

Friends ended 19 years ago this May but its fanbase remains as fold as ever – and the actors share these nostalgic sentiments. In fact, series mainstay Courteney Cox recreated an iconic moment as Monica Geller and her chaotic closet that fans instantly recognized all this time later.

Friends ran from 1994 to 2004, boasting an ensemble cast comprised of Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc. Its finale amassed 52.5 million viewers in America alone, making it the fifth-most-watched series finale, a distinction it holds to this date. But it was a scene from “The One with the Secret Closet” that Cox recreated, to great effect, thanks to the show’s enduring popularity.

Cox, 59, took to social media to share a video straight from her own home. The footage shows that she recreated her character’s messy apartment closet using her own. The video was, ostensibly, taken to show off her remodeled dining room, but her husband, Johnny McDaid, quickly shows the less-than-organized nature of her storage.

The camera pans the area in disarray, leaving Cox to hastily try – in vain – to cover up the mess. Ultimately, she can only close the door, quickly urging the cameraman to move on. “Come on…we all have one,” she captioned the post.

Cox almost missed out on the closet scene, and all others

The scene between Cox and her husband perfectly mirrors the time in Friends, season 8, episode 14, when Chandler investigates a door that hides untold secrets – and organizational disasters. This, too, revealed that Monica was hiding a far messier side that her husband was stunned to discover.

But all of this very nearly wasn’t a reality at all. Originally, Cox was approached as a top pick to play Rachel Green. However, Cox turned down this promising opportunity. Instead, she wanted to pursue the role of Monica, but rejecting this first gift presented on a silver platter might have shut her out of Friends completely, especially since the role then went to Jennifer Aniston.

But Cox stuck to her guns because she felt she “related more” to Monica. She was up against worthy competition, with Leah Remini and Nancy McKeon also vying for the role. When Remini lost the role, she “cried for days,” but knew since she passed Cox in the parking lot that she would not get the gig.

Good thing those skeletons are out of the closet. Now there’s just everything else to clean up!
