Prince George is already another year older and each day, he looks more and more like his dad Prince William. To mark the occasion, George received a new official birthday portrait. It just so happens, decades ago, Prince William received a portrait of his own – and their respective pictures make them look like twins.
Young Prince George was born on July 22, the son of William, heir apparent to the British throne, and Kate Middleton, now stylized Princess Catherine. George, second in line for the throne, 10 on Saturday, and is the older brother of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

According to tradition, a royal birthday means the release of a new royal portrait. Royal photographer Millie Pilkington worked with Prince George, who posed this year on the outside steps of Windsor. This year’s outfit saw George in a light-colored, checker-patterned button-down shirt, dark pants, and suede oxfords. The portrait offers a look right at George’s face, looking straight ahead while he wears a warm smile under honey-brown hair combed to the side.

In addition to offering a sweet look at the personal lives of Britain’s next ruling family unit, it also gives a crystal clear way of comparing George with his father William. Prince William’s 10-year-old portrait shows him also looking straight at the camera, hair styled not too differently, and smile just as vibrant. William, in his portrait, is seen wearing a red jumper over a dark shirt with a light collar. The effect is like looking at twins.

New norms are set surprisingly often. For how typical an annual birthday photo is for the royal family, individual members also developed unique habits of their own. Jump back to April 23 of this year and Prince Louis posed for a photo celebrating his fifth birthday. It shows the young prince grinning as he’s pushed along in a wheelbarrow.
But here’s the catch. Usually, his mother, Princess Catherine, takes the photo. This year, she did not, as shown by Kate being quite visible in the picture. She’s not in focus, but she’s clearly seen wearing a striped shirt, smiling from ear to ear. Pilkington took this photo too.
Who knows what next year will bring?
