A royal photographer, Samir Hussein, who photographs the family on overseas tours and during official engagements, talks about the last time he took photos of the Queen and how it was a spur of the moment. Hussein took his final photos of the Queen and her great-grandson, Prince Louis, on the balcony during the flypast at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The iconic photos, yet unplanned, garnered lots of attention from fans worldwide because of the young prince’s hilarious expressions during the flypast. Prince Louis appeared to be irritated by the aircraft noise and made no effort to hide his feelings while the Queen maintained her composure and smiled at the crowd.

“The last time I photographed Queen Elizabeth II was at the Jubilee celebrations in June,” Hussein said. “As it turned out, this would be her last big farewell to the UK, and I am so pleased I was able to photograph her at such a joyous occasion and she was able to witness it all.”

He claims the pictures are his most favorite of the Queen. “The Queen’s appearances were limited, but her appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace produced some classic royal photos,” he continued. “This was my standout photo from the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations this summer. The reaction of Prince Louis to the flypast is very amusing, and the Queen smiling, taking it all in her stride, just makes the photo,” Hussein said. “A lovely, spontaneous royal photo to capture.”
