Rumors about Michelle Pfeiffer “hating” her appearance in Grease 2 have been circulating; however, the actress recently set the records straight and opened up about her feelings about the 1982 movie. Although Grease 2 was a box office flop, the original made nearly $400 million and played no small role in making actors like the late Olivia Newton-John famous. But truth be told, movie critics and fans were not at all impressed with the sequel, and neither was Michelle.
She explained that her alleged comment about hating Grease 2 in a 2007 interview was taken out of context and incorrectly reported. The actress admits years after the interview that Grease 2 will always be special to her and her career, while also revealing her surprise at the cult following Grease has amassed over the years.
What does Michelle think about ‘Grease 2?’
Michelle’s role as Stephanie in Grease 2 was her ticket to meeting director Brian de Palma, who hired her for her breakthrough role in Scarface the following year. Hollywood.com reported that the actress “hated that film with a vengeance and could not believe how bad it was” in an old interview, adding that she was too young to know any better. Years later, an article by Buzzfeed quoted the story, leading Michelle to share her thoughts on social media.

“This project is and has always been so special to me and my history. One should never trust a publication to get quotes right if they can’t even bother to spell the person’s name correctly,” Michelle responded on her Instagram page. She also spoke further about her thoughts on the film during the 2023 oral history of Grease 2 by Entertainment Weekly.
Further thoughts on ‘Grease 2’
Although she did not hate Grease 2, Michelle did have some reservations about the movie, which she stated recently. “I was very uncomfortable because there was a tremendous amount of hype around it… There was a lot of marketing that was centered around us. I remember there was this one ad that was like, ‘Too hot.’ And I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is so awkward. What if people don’t think I’m hot? I’m being shoved down people’s throats.’ I do remember feeling a lot of pressure on our shoulders for this to succeed. Because the first one was so beloved. It was a really tough act to follow,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
Michelle also talked about her audition for the role and how she did not expect to be selected for the part. She had forgotten her choreography for the last part of the audition, which left her feeling “humiliated.”
“I left with my tail between my legs, feeling so humiliated. And somebody’s assistant, I think it was [choreographer] Pat Birch’s assistant, ran after me across the Paramount studio lot. I said something about being really embarrassed and she said, ‘Well, you shouldn’t be, because she wants you to come back tomorrow,’” she recalled. The 65-year-old added that playing Stephanie was quite easy because she had the personality for it.
