Why ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ Host Pat Sajak Disappeared During Bonus Round

Where in the world is Pat Sajak? Wheel of Fortune has been hosted by 76-year-old Sajak since 1981. But in a recent episode, Sajak pulled a disappearing act just in time for the bonus round, leaving participants and viewers alike quite perplexed – all while Sajak hid in the announcement booth. Why?

Wheel of Fortune boasts a lot of iconic symbols of the show’s enduring popularity, from Sajak to the titular wheel, and co-host Vanna White, who has been on board the quiz series since ’82. But there is another important hero making the show what it is: Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton. His popularity is the reason behind Sajak’s temporary absence.

Wednesday’s episode of Wheel of Fortune unfolded like business as usual. Except, once it got to the bonus round, Sajak was not present at all to do his hosting duties. What was further surprising was that it wasn’t White who took the reins in his stead. It was Wheel of Fortune announcer Thornton. Confused fans took to Twitter to voice their curiosity.

“Where did Pat Sajak go for the last segment of tonight’s show?” one user asked online. Another queried, “Where is Pat Sajak for the final puzzle?” Another viewer saw the changeup and, unfamiliar with this kind of setup, said on Twitter, “That was cray,” calling the whole thing crazy. But the reason was actually very personal for one of the contestants.

Contestant Sarah made it all the way to the bonus round. Earlier in the show, Sarah had told Sajak, “I love Jim Thornton so much. And how could someone not? His voice is so soothing and energizing. He’s hilarious and just such a good person.” In fact, she added, “When I don’t hear his voice I worry about him. So, I’m so glad he’s here.”

Sarah’s statements left quite the impression. The Wheel of Fortune Instagram page mused, “If only we could figure out a way for Sarah and Jim to meet.” So, to make this game a little extra special for Sarah, they had Sajak bow out during the bonus round to give Thornton a good entry point to host instead.

The gesture was greatly appreciated, with Sarah praising later, “I had so much fun. And we got to do it together!” All this, despite the fact that Sarah wasn’t the champion of the night and missed the $40,000 prize. She won the real victory that day, and those who missed Sajak could spot him in the announcer’s booth.
