Robert Downey Jr. Shares Heartfelt 17th Anniversary Post For Wife Susan

Robert Downey Jr. shows the world how much he loves his wife of 17 years, Susan Downey. He took to his social media outlets to post how Susan has been his “bedrock” alongside a never-seen-before picture of their Jewish wedding in 2005. “Today marks 17 years of unadulterated marital bliss.. Susan, you are my bedrock, touchstone and lucky stars to boot,” the post reads.

The couple met on the set of Gothika, which was Susan’s first time being a movie producer. Unlike conventional love stories, sparks didn’t immediately fly until much later. In fact, Susan thought the Iron Man star was weird. Well, who prefers oatmeal to Japanese food if not Robert?

How Susan Met Robert Downey Jr.

Susan recalled their personal encounter during a meeting with the movie director and Halle Berry, Robert’s costar. “We were up in Montreal prepping for Gothika, and we had lunch with the director and Halle Berry. Everybody else ordered Japanese, but Robert told us how oatmeal was the ‘superfood.’ He brought his own packets of oatmeal to have at lunch. And he had this box of various herbs and stuff. And then he started doing these yoga moves. I mean, he was interesting but weird.”

However, the duo started bonding during a treadmill workout on the set. “Robert goes, ‘Levin (her maiden name), you wanna go to dinner?’ and I said, ‘Eh, I’ll grab something to eat,’ so we agreed to go change and meet in the lobby. And as he walked down the stairs toward me, I remember looking up at him and suddenly thinking, He’s really cute,” she revealed. The lovers enjoyed each other’s company and married two years later.

They wouldn’t have married because of his substance abuse

Just as he thanked “lucky stars” in his wedding anniversary post, he is definitely fortunate to have Susan in his life. Robert met her when substance abuse nearly wrecked his life, and he claimed Susan helped him get over his addiction.

The couple is grateful that their paths crossed and how much they’ve impacted each other’s lives. “I think he saw what we had. There was something magical there, something we couldn’t put our finger on. He always says that we became this third thing when we got together — something that neither of us could have become by ourselves — and I think that’s true,” Susan said.
