Michelle Phillips opens up about her career

Michelle Phillips is an iconic singer-songwriter and actress. Now, 77, she reflects on her life and her long career. Michelle co-founded the group the Mamas & the Papas with John Phillips in the ’60s. Some of their famous songs are “California Dreamin'” and “Monday, Monday.”

Growing up, she wasn’t really a singer. In fact, her family was so shocked that she could sing so well! She admitted, “I loved it when my father – my whole family – was so proud of everything that I was doing. It’s an unforgettable feeling when you hear your parents say, ‘Oh my God, I had no idea you could sing.'”

When the group and Michelle and John broke up in the late ’60s, she moved on to acting. Michelle is perhaps best known for her role in Knots Landing in the late ’80s and early ’90s. She said, “The actors I worked with – Bill Devane, Michelle Lee, Nicollette Sheridan – you could look into their eyes and you could see [a reflection of] your own character. You relate to each other in such a deep way. You have to love them in a very deep way.”

These days, Michelle is the last surviving member of the Mamas & the Papas and would love to make a movie about their experiences. She isn’t working much anymore but enjoying time with her grandchildren. She added, “… I absolutely loved doing ‘Knots Landing.’ And even though there were a lot of difficult moments during the Mamas & the Papas, I was very proud of what we did.”
