Elderly Lion Couple Put To Sleep At The Same Time So They Don’t Have To Live Without Each Other

An elderly lion couple was put to sleep at the same time so neither of them had to live alone, without the other. Hubert and Kalisa lived together at the Los Angeles Zoo and were put down after six years together. On average, lions are expected to live about 15 to 17 years. These two made it to 21 years old together.

Both of the lions were declining in health in addition to acquiring old-age issues. This made their quality of life much less, and so, euthanasia was made the only option. Hubert was originally born in Chicago at Lincoln Park Zoo and Kalisa came from Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. They officially met in 2004 when they both came to the Los Angeles Zoo.

Beth Schaefer, a spokesperson for LA Zoo, releases a statement in light of the news. “These lions were charismatic both together as partners and separately, but they were hardly ever apart from one another. Their undivided attention was always on the other as they rested together, cuddled and nuzzled often.”

CEO and zoo director Denise Verret adds that the lions were “an iconic part of the Los Angeles Zoo experience.” She adds that the zoo’s staff and guests “have been touched by their loyal companionship.”

Denise continues, “These affectionate companions came to the LA Zoo six years ago, and they quickly charmed themselves into our hearts as we observed their magnificent beauty and unique bond. It was often said, you don’t see Kalisa without Hubert being close by.”

She adds, “So, while it is truly heart-wrenching that we had to say goodbye to this iconic pair, we can take comfort in knowing they left together. These lions will remain a positive part of our history, and they will be greatly missed.”
