Steve Miller turns 83 on October 5, and the man behind "The Joker" is doing something few expected a year ago. He is going back on stage. After walking away from touring in 2025 over his fears about extreme weather at outdoor shows, Miller has announced a pair of rare concerts for this fall, according to Ultimate Classic Rock. Born in Milwaukee in 1943, Steven Haworth Miller formed the Steve Miller Band in 1966 and spent the next decade turning blues-rock into some of the friendliest hits on the radio. Steve Miller Turns 83 Still Flying Like An Eagle Steve Miller / Wikipedia The two concerts are scheduled for October 9 and 10 at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater in New York City. Rather than reviving his canceled rock tour, Miller is returning to a smaller, indoor setting to celebrate the blues and jazz musicians who inspired him. The venue seats approximately 1,300 people, a far cry from the large outdoor crowds he once regularly entertained. The performances are part of a nearly decade-long tradition for Miller at the venue, making them less of a full-fledged touring comeback and more of a return to one of his favorite musical settings. The catalog is a classic-rock station all by itself. "The Joker," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Rock'n Me," "Take the Money and Run," and "Jet Airliner" have never really left the dial. The songs were built to sound easy, which is the hardest trick there is. Miller's musical education began long before his first hit record, and he learned from some extraordinary teachers. His parents were close friends with guitar pioneer Les Paul and singer Mary Ford, who frequently visited the family home when Miller was young. Paul taught him his first guitar chords, while blues legend T-Bone Walker later showed him how to play lead guitar when he was just nine years old. Walker even taught him tricks like playing behind his head. Those childhood encounters gave Miller a lifelong appreciation for blues and jazz, the very music he continues celebrating onstage more than seven decades later. A Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer Who Was Not Finished Steve Miller Band / Wikipedia Miller's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2016 was anything but a quiet celebration. Shortly after accepting the honor, he publicly criticized the organization for its treatment of musicians, claiming that his bandmates would have to pay as much as $10,000 apiece to attend the ceremony. "They need to respect the artists they say they're honoring, but they don't," he told reporters. His outspoken comments caused a stir, particularly among the Black Keys, who had inducted him that evening. The group's members later admitted they regretted participating in the ceremony. Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. His decision to stop touring last year sounded like a quiet ending, so the fall dates feel like a gift. He is not the only classic rocker refusing to call it a career. Carlos Santana, at 79, is back in Las Vegas for his 14th year at the House of Blues. Eighty-three years old, and the Gangster of Love still has somewhere to be.
